The governor's seat is open since Gov. Ron DeSantis is term-limited. All 120 House seats and 20 of 40 Senate seats are up, and they decide state funding for Florida A&M University and the private HBCUs.

The underfunding letter

In 2023, the U.S. Departments of Education and Agriculture wrote to the governor of Florida. Their numbers show Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University got about $2.0 billion less in state money from 1987 to 2020 than it would have with the same per-student funding as the state's original land-grant university.

Florida's 2026-27 state budget, signed in June 2026, includes $92 million for Building C at the FAMU-FSU College of Engineering, which Florida A&M shares with Florida State. (news.fsu.edu)
