- Races to watch
- There is no governor's race this year. All 100 House of Delegates seats and 17 of 34 state Senate seats are on the ballot, and the legislature sets funding for West Virginia State University and Bluefield State University. Voters also choose a U.S. senator and fill a seat on the state Supreme Court of Appeals.

- Citizenship Voting Requirement Amendment Would change the state constitution to say only U.S. citizens may vote in West Virginia elections.
The underfunding letter
In 2023, the U.S. Departments of Education and Agriculture wrote to the governor of West Virginia. Their numbers show West Virginia State University got about $853 million less in state money from 1987 to 2020 than it would have with the same per-student funding as the state's original land-grant university.

In its 2026 session, the West Virginia Legislature fully funded the state's higher education funding formula for the first time. The formula pays public colleges based on results such as enrollment, graduation rates and graduates who stay in the state. (wsaz.com)
