Races to watch
There is no governor's race or regular state legislative election in 2026; those come in 2027. The November 3 ballot has the U.S. Senate race, open primaries for U.S. House (with a December 12 runoff if needed), one seat on the state Board of Elementary and Secondary Education, two Public Service Commission seats, and 10 constitutional amendments. The legislature elected in 2027 will set funding for Southern University and Grambling State.

The underfunding letter

In 2023, the U.S. Departments of Education and Agriculture wrote to the governor of Louisiana. Their numbers show Southern University and A&M College got about $1.1 billion less in state money from 1987 to 2020 than it would have with the same per-student funding as the state's original land-grant university.
