    Races to watch
There is no governor's race this year. All 120 state House seats and all 50 state Senate seats are on the ballot, and the legislature writes the budget for the state's five public HBCUs. Voters also choose a U.S. senator, U.S. House members, and judges for the state Supreme Court and Court of Appeals.

    The underfunding letter

In 2023, the U.S. Departments of Education and Agriculture wrote to the governor of North Carolina. Their numbers show North Carolina A&T State University got about $2.1 billion less in state money from 1987 to 2020 than it would have with the same per-student funding as the state's original land-grant university.
